Andrew snored, but softly. Kieran rolled over in the night to wrap himself around him instead, and so I managed to slip away without disturbing either of them. I retrieved my phone from my pants and found the long-awaited e-mail from Washington. I repaired to the living room below to read it lest the light from the screen wake them.

The dock was silent beyond the sliding glass doors, only the party lights and cup carnage to testify to the evening’s revelry. I admired the disarray with a little smile on my face as I popped open the e-mail app.

And promptly sighed. Brooks had nothing for me. There was no known way to bypass Andrew’s fingerprinting mechanism without specialized equipment. It did contain an emergency code panel within, but I’d have to find the codes for it—cracking those would require certain software, not to mention computing equipment I hadn’t happened to bring. They could have it brought to me the following day, but that did me little good at the moment.

No word on the construction company that had installed it, but that was just a matter of time too. I slunk downstairs into Andrew’s old hallway and made a halfhearted search of his desktop computer for anything resembling a password. Failing that, I checked my email, found another note from Mom, and replied to tell her that I hoped she had a wonderful time in Switzerland and I’d come to Philadelphia when she got home.

I fell back into bed, though I can’t say I remember hitting the pillow.
